Each of us experiences sadness or low mood at certain times. However, this state usually passes quickly because we have control over our emotions. In people with mood disorders, the ability to regulate their emotions and feelings is significantly impaired, which can lead to episodes of prolonged sadness alternating with periods of mania. The condition most often appears in late adolescence or early adulthood. It may manifest as:
Each personality disorder should be considered individually, as the reasons for their development vary greatly. Personality disorders significantly hinder functioning in society and fulfilling important roles. At Euromedica, we focus on a holistic approach to the patient and on identifying the underlying cause of the condition. After consultation, a psychiatrist may recommend psychotherapy and/or pharmacotherapy to help alleviate symptoms.
Personality disorders are a broad group of mental disorders characterized by the development of abnormal personality traits that hinder a person’s ability to function in society and fulfill roles important to them.
Neurotic disorders are most often characterized by irrational anxiety. They manifest as general unease, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and memory problems. They also contribute to an overall decline in well-being, causing headaches, nausea, and excessive sweating. If left untreated, they can persist for years and lead to a gradual worsening of symptoms.
The first psychiatric appointment lasts between 40 and 60 minutes. During the visit, the doctor conducts a detailed interview concerning both mental health issues and the patient’s overall health. Before the first appointment, it is advisable to prepare test results, a history of previously used medications, and hospital discharge summaries. In some cases, making a diagnosis may require 2–3 visits and a consultation with a psychologist or other specialists.
In justified cases, pharmacotherapy is used. Medications are selected individually based on the symptom profile, coexisting conditions, and previously used treatments. Choosing the right pharmacotherapy and achieving a therapeutic response may take time.
