Hematology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood, hematopoietic system, and lymphatic system, which may be malignant or non-malignant in nature. These conditions are most often associated with abnormalities in peripheral blood counts, enlarged lymph nodes, or an enlarged spleen, although they often remain asymptomatic or present with non-specific symptoms such as night sweats, weight loss, fevers, and increased susceptibility to infections. The physician orders and interprets laboratory and imaging tests and performs microscopic examinations of peripheral blood smears. In some cases, it may be necessary to perform a bone marrow aspiration or a trephine biopsy.
